Learning Kanji: Learner Perceptions and Strategies
Yoshiko Mori, Georgetown University
Learning kanji is challenging, but the sense of challenge makes learning Japanese a lot of fun and could act as a motivator to continue to study Japanese. In this talk, I will first make an overview of the nature of kanji and the challenge in kanji learning. I will then report the findings of my research that investigated Japanese language students' kanji perceptions and the impact of their self-reported learning strategies on their achievement. Based on my research findings, I will argue that (a) Japanese language students reflect upon their own kanji learning from various perspectives, (b) students' task-specific beliefs have a significant impact on their achievement on given tasks, and (c) metacognitive awareness plays an important role in dealing with a challenging learning task.

多和田葉子(たわだ・ようこ)さんは、とてもゆうめいな日本人の作家(さっか =author)です。多和田さんは、日本語(にほんご)とドイツ語で しょうせつ(novel)や詩(し=poem)をかきます (to write)。

In Japan she has received the prestigious Akutagawa Prize. In Germany she won the Adelbert-von-Chamisso Prize for her contributions to German culture. She also received the Prize in Literature from the City of Hamburg, the Lessing Prize, and in 2005, on the 173rd anniversary of Goethe’s death, the Goethe-Medal, an official decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany awarded by the Goethe Institut. Outside of Japan and Germany, Tawada’s fiction, poetry, and essays have been featured in journals and anthologies in France, China, Italy, Holland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. ジャパンクラブ リトリート
みなさん、
せんしゅうのしゅうまつは なにをしましたか?
キャンパスでは、せんしゅうのしゅうまつのきんようびとどようび、
ジャパンクラブのリトリートがありました。
わたしも いきました。
きんようびに、にほんじん(えんどうさん)の アニメのレクチャーがありました。
いろいろなアニメのはなしが とてもおもしろかったです。
そして、みんなでゲームをしました。
どようびは うんどうかいがありました。ゆうしょうはあおチームでした。
みんな よくがんばりましたね。
おひるごはんは おにぎりをたべました。そして おみそしるをのみました。
どようびのごご、フットボールのゲームがありました。
そのあと まっちゃアイスとしらたまのデザートをたべました。
とてもたのしいしゅうまつでした。

BLOG PROJECT!
Let’s start the Blog Project. For this class we would like you to keep a blog because it provides a place:
1. To share/express your happiness, surprise, excitement, and/or frustration, as well as any questions you might have, while learning the Japanese language (or any other topics).

- While studying new grammar and words is very important when learning a language, it is equally important to actually use the language in a real life context. You must not wait to express yourself only when you think you have mastered the language because language learning is basically an ongoing process. In the beginning you may use English or any languages to express yourself, but I recommend that you gradually switch to Japanese whenever you feel comfortable enough to express yourself in Japanese.
- Language learning is not limited to what you do for the course but also includes what you do and experience outside the class. We will create links to your classmates' blogs as well as blogs by students in other schools, so you can see what other people think and feel about Japanese language learning (as well as other topics). You are also strongly encouraged to leave comments on these blogs.
- We know that your Japanese language is very limited, but you can convey your intended meaning more effectively by utilizing other resources such as pictures and videos.Remember that people utilize not only language but also other resources such as tone of your voice, music, body language, picture, color, font style and size for communication.
- Sometimes it is challenging to see our own progress or growth. Blogs help you to look back and see how you have changed through the course of your Japanese language learning.
- At the end of the semester your blog will be evaluated by the instructor, your classmates, other people, as well as yourself. We will discuss the criteria of evaluation later.
